Who God Hates: Psalm 5

by Lawrence Kelley*

Here we find David not only crying to God for deliverance from the wicked, but for God to vindicate Him while destroying those who are set on his destruction.

  1. Overview:
    1. David appeals to God to hear and answer his prayer (vv. 1-3).
      1. First notice to whom He prays My King, My God (v. 2). David the king acknowledges his King.
      2. He is earnest asking God to: give ear, to consider, and give heed.
      3. This occurs in the morning - his thoughts turn to God when he awakes.
      4. David directs his prayer (v.3) - The word used here is the same as the word for arranging sacrifices on an altar, or shewbread on the table.
        1. The words of this prayer are his morning sacrifice.
        2. The words are premeditated, arranged & thoughtful.
      5. Then, He looks up, in anticipation - He sends a request & expects a response.
    2. The alienation of the wicked from the Lord is described in six steps (vv. 4-6).
      1. God is not a basket of puppies.
      2. There are things he hates and will destroy.
    3. But there is a contrast. David is not like these men (vv. 7-10)
      1. Surrounded by God's mercy, and in the fear of the Lord, David worships toward the temple (v. 7).
      2. He prays for God's righteous guidance and protection because of his enemies (v. 8).
      3. The men who oppose him, providing the contrast, are putrid and entirely corrupt (v. 9).
        1. Paul quotes this verse in Rom 3:13, applying it to all men everywhere.
        2. apart from the grace of God this is the condition of all.
      4. David then pleads with God to take them out. The righteous cry out for God to display His righteous judgments. In particular, he prays that God would destroy the treacherous by their "own counsels" (v. 10).
    4. There is still joy for those who love the Lord's name.
      1. In a world filled with warfare, those who trust in God can rejoice and shout for joy (v. 11).
      2. God is their defender; those who love His name can rejoice. God blesses the righteous, and protects him with an encompassing shield (v. 12)
  2. Let's return to what this passage says about the hatred of God. God is holy, and therefore He hates sin.
    1. And the place where He distinguishes sin from the sinner is in the cross.
      1. Outside of Christ, God never distinguishes the sin and sinner.
      2. It is not the sin He throws in to the lake of fire.
    2. We must remember what God does.
      1. He takes "no pleasure" in some people (v. 4).
      2. He will not dwell with them (v. 4).
      3. His sight undoes the boastful (v. 5),
      4. He hates the worker of iniquity (v. 5). (Matt 7:21-23)
      5. God will destroy liars (v. 6).
      6. He abhors bloody and deceitful men (v. 6).
    3. But where do such individuals come from?
      1. The answer is that they grow up from being children, and in many cases, they were very cute kids.
        1. And in such cases, there was a first lie, a first deception, and it was a little thing.
        2. It was a little folly, it was a small iniquity. But if it was sin, this is like saying it was a small enormity.

  3. The devil has established a curriculum for fools.
    1. Our "popular" culture is a sewer pipe filled with the things condemned in this psalm: iniquity, boastfulness, falsehood, bloodthirst, rebellion, etc.
      1. Not only do we not hate these things, many of them are our glory.
      2. A few words to those "young people" who believe themselves mysteriously immune from the contaminant.
        1. I'm a Christian & I know these things are wrong and with this knowledge go out to the movies, or listen to this song, or watch this tv show.
        2. Much of what we consume, david would rate OT - open tomb.
        3. They don't want to go in; they just want to sit outside and smell the stench.
        4. And everyone is smelling the stench and catching flies.
        5. The lies are painted in jazzy colors, a nice backbeat, and sensual perfume. But that odor underneath is the odor of death.
          1. It is not enough to claim that you hate fornication, that you hate idolatry, that you hate bloodthirsty violence, and that you hate adulteries, drunkenness and the like.
          2. Evil is not allowed to dwell with God. Why do you allow it to dwell with you?
      3. If you think like this, and more than a few christians do, you are aspiring to be hated and loathed by God.
      4. Lies surround us on every hand. Those who are enrolled in this curriculum of unbelief -- CDs, video games, movies, magazines -- should drop out.

The Bible tells us that we are engaged in a spiritual war, and that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. The Lord Jesus Christ is our shield, and He will destroy His enemies and ours. The great concern is that we not drift to the point where we find ourselves numbered among those enemies.
